The Gratenau family can look back on a long
lasting business tradition originating in the 19th century.

Heinrich Gratenau founded his agency for
northern solid timber products in 1971 after
being partner of a timber importing company in the northern german City of Bremen.

Swedish business relationships were the
beginning for the agency and were soon further developed by integrating norwegian and finish supplyers of timber products.

In 1986 Heinrich Gratenau, Jr. became
managing partner, entering the company two years before. Studying business administration and extensive internships in Finland, Sweden and Germany, he added further knowledge to
the company.

Soon Finish suppliers gained more importance, followed by Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian in the early 1990s. With the German reunification
HEGRA expanded market activities to the
eastern part of Germany.
